Today, the pastor of Christ the King Parish, Rev. Michael Nam Nguyen, in Terrytown and Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. RaeNell Houston, informed the school community that Christ the King School would close at the end of this school year. Below is the text of the communication sent to parents this afternoon.
Dear CTK Parents and Families:
Peace and blessings of Jesus Christ be with you and your families.
As many of you are aware, Christ the King School has experienced significant declines in enrollment and financial struggles since Hurricane Katrina. With the welfare of the entire Christ the King community at the forefront of our decisions and in consultation with Archdiocese of New Orleans leadership, we have made the very difficult decision to close Christ the King School beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. Please know that this decision was not made lightly and that many efforts were made to keep the school open.
It is our sincere hope that this announcement will allow you time to enroll your child(ren) in another area Catholic school. Staff from the Office of Catholic Schools will be making appointments to come to campus in the coming weeks to meet with families to explore their Catholic school options in an effort to make this transition as easy as possible. OCS staff will also be working with our faculty as they transition to new roles.
At this time, we want to thank you for your support of Christ the King. We would also like to thank our principal, Dawn Castillo, and our faculty and staff for their commitment to Catholic education at Christ the King over the years. We are grateful that the faculty, staff and administration have provided a strong academic and religious foundation for our students, despite facing enrollment and financial challenges.
In closing, we ask for the Christ the King community to join together in prayer during this period of transition. We understand that change is difficult. Please know that we will do everything we can to help our students transition to new schools. The doors of Christ the King Church are always open to each and every one of you. Be assured of our prayers during this challenging time.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Michael Nam Nguyen Dr. RaeNell Houston
